Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Bannow Bay’

$14.84 $25.67
Description Description A compact, mound forming shrub, short for a Pittosporum, Pittosporum Bannow Bay is great for blobbary. Growing to a height of 1m x 60cm wide. In many ways it is simialr to: Pittosporum ‘Golf Ball’; Tom Thumb and ‘Pompom‘. With dark young stems and green, grey waxy margined glossy leaves, variegated with a creamy white perimeter. Turning to a tinted pink and then a dark purple/crimson in the winter with the frosts.  It then bursts to life with fresh, vibrant new growth in spring, though the majority of growth comes late, in September. Pittosporum ‘Bannow Bay’ has small inconspicuous, clusters of flowers appearing from early summer.  The seeds are covered in a pitchy, sticky substance which gives Pittosporum its name, pitto-pitch, spore-seed. Essentially meaning sticky seed. Due to the changing foliage, Pittosporum ‘Bannow Bay’ is great for supplying all year round interest. Whether it be in Winter with the maroon like foliage or in spring with the bright green on purple contrast. Its compact nature makes it ideal for a low partitioning hedge. Like all Pittosporums, ‘Bannow Bay’ loves full sun and tolerates partial shade. Position in a sheltered position on free draining soil. Suggested uses for Pittosporum Bannow Bay: City and courtyard gardens Coastal Cottage and informal garden Patio and container plants Low Maintenance Flower borders and beds Partitioning hedge   Summary Exposure Sheltered Soil Well drained Aspect Full sun Hardiness RHS hardiness level  H4: hardy through most of the UK (-10 to -5) Pruning Prune in late winter or early spring Purchasing a plant   When purchasing a plant it is essential to give it the best chance of survival or it can prove expensive. Put the roots in water until it no longer bubbles. This means it is fully saturated, then place in the hole. Make sure it is 1cm or 2cm proud, this means less digging and it helps with drainage. Break up the soil around the hole to help the roots grow out.
