Description Description Berberis Thunbergii Atropurpurea 40cm 3L Berberis Thunbergii Atropurpurea is a truly stunning Japanese Barberry. It is capable of adding colour and brightening up borders and rockeries with its yellow flowers and deep orange berries against a dark purple foliage; offering a stunning contrast of natural colours. It is perfect for a low hedge or border edge being incredibly low maintenance. It provides an alternative to Box (Buxus Sempervirens) which is susceptible to caterpillar and Box Blight. When planting Berberis Thunbergii Atropurpurea do so approximately 45cm apart to minimise them competing for limited resources in later life. They area slow growers, growing up to 10-15 cm a year up to a total of 100-125cm maximum height. However they can be pruned and maintained below this or even coppiced. However if coppiced flowering may be delayed a year and when pruning in the autumn you should cut out the straggly stems. Berberis grows well in moist but well drained soil. Nevertheless they will grow almost anywhere but waterlogged soil.They thrive in full sun but can cope in partial shade. It is also exceptionally hardy when planted and are very good for Bees, the flowers suppling them with food and the foliage and spikes suppling protection for wildlife.
