Description Description Astrantia major ‘Rubra’ (Greater Masterwort) is a truly robust herbaceous clump forming perennial with dark, plum red pincushion flowers with red green stems. Its deep green leaves which split in to 3 to 5 and it is native to central and eastern Europe. They are an adaptable being able to survive in both full sun and partial shade and are hardy throughout most of the most severe UK and European temperatures with a RHS hardiness rating of H7 meaning they can survive extreme European and UK temperatures down to below -20C. When positioning, it prefers moist soils but can tolerate drier ones and plant in a sheltered position. This is often done best in the middle or front of a flower bed. Astrantia major ‘Rubra’ (Greater Masterwort) is known for being great for local wildlife, its flowers are rich in nectar and pollen attracting insects, bees and birds alike. It has no toxic to pets, horses, livestock or people.
