Description Description Astrantia major ‘Alba’ (Masterwort or Melancholy Gentleman) is a herbaceous perennial with striking white flower (Alba means white, their is method in mad botany names) and deep green leaves which split, native to central and eastern Europe. They are an adaptable being able to survive in both full sun and partial shade and are hardy throughout most of the UK with a RHS hardiness rating of H4 meaning they can survive temperatures between -5C and -10C. When positioning, it prefers moist soils but can tolerate drier ones and plant in a sheltered position. This is often done best in the middle or front of a flower bed.
