Description Garrya fremontii, commonly known as the Fremont silktassel or bear brush, is a dioecious, evergreen shrub prized for its intriguing long, pendulous, silvery chains with yellowish to pinkish catkins and leathery, shiny green, egg-shaped leaves. The flowers appear in late winter with male and female catkins on separate plants. The showy, drooping clusters can reach between 2-5 inches long on both male and female shrubs. Females will produce blue-black berries, if paired with a male, that attract birds. A west coast native from Washington to southern California. Appreciates well-drained moist to dry soils. Drought tolerant once established. A lovely specimen shrub, screen or informal hedge with great winter interest when few other plants are in bloom. Deer resistant.
