Description Artemisia tridentata, commonly called big sagebrush, is a cornerstone species in the arid landscapes of western North America. Its silvery, aromatic leaves and robust adaptability sustain western ecosystems by offering crucial wildlife shelter, anchoring soil, and supporting Indigenous traditions. Big sagebrush flourishes in punishing rangelands, semi-arid habitats, and deserts, making it essential for conservation. This woody shrub forms rounded mounds with three-lobed leaves (“tridentata”) which can develop into contorted and fanciful forms with age. In late summer and early fall, upright stems bear yellowish flower clusters that supply seeds for wildlife. Its deep roots tap groundwater and guard against erosion. It can reach heights of 3-15 feet and spread 3-10 feet wide. Attracts bees and butterflies. Photo credit: Wikipedia.
